*~*~*Past*~*~*
He hadn't see the sun's smile in ages, nor felt her glowing embrace. Any feeling would be lovely. Choking in the dark, offered him nothing useful, nothing helpful that would help keep him sane. He hadn't seen another person in years, yet alone smelled sweet scent of blooming flowers, or seen the smile on a friend's face, or heard the soft chirping of birds. A voice filled with bitter regrets and terrible sorrows, etched into his brain like an itch he could not scratch. Was it a blessing or just the one thing keeping him from the edge? That sweet seducing edge, calling him toward his destiny, begging him to step off for eternity, pleading for him to fall into its endless forever. He could not decide? What was he to do?
*~*~*Present*~*~*
There wasn't much that stunned the old youth into silence, but the memories of this place did. His mouth hadn't opened once in the last thirty minutes, not even to complain that he was hungry. The only noise that did come from the monkey was of his stomach, rumbling noisily in protest, wanting food. Even his breathing was silent. Golden eyes suddenly lowered to the area of ground at his feet, the loniless he had suffered, the grief at not being to help his only friend, the bird and the sheer hysteria he had felt at times all came washing back. Though with the bad always comes the good. He remembered the boy with hair spun of the light of the sun itself, the boy that rescued him and led him into the world, told him of it's wonders and faults.
In this circumstance, the good wasn't enough to outdo the bad and the monkey found himself not five minutes later, sat in the same place in which he'd been sat for five hundred years, running the chains (that surprisingly were still there) between his fingers. It had only been seven years ago that he was here.

Sanzo stepped into the cave where he'd first found Goku...the source of that calling that had constantly been playing in his mind and seemingly never sending. His flip-flopped feet made a quite soft yet hard noise on the stoney, dirt floor and his purple eyes drifted to where Goku was sat with the broken chains in his hands, his face bowed and actually looking rather down. Sanzo pitied him slightly....he wouldn't know what 500 years of solitary confinment would do to him...but Goku had stayed alive and seemingly sane. You had to admit..the kid had guts.
He had walked up to this spot in the mountains when he noticed that Goku had once again wandered off when they had stopped for a break. And even is Sanzo would never openly say it..he worried when Goku ran off..so he went to the place where he and Goky first met. When he was at the young age of sixteen and finally answering that mournful call.
His droopy eyes looked to the figure of Goku and instead of going up to him to offer comfoet from the past memories he had...he stood a little way off, half in the light, his blonde hair tinting golden as the sunlight glinted sparkiling through the long edges of cave wall. "Goku, you alright?" Sanzo asked in his rogue voice, his voice a little low and his eyes fixed on his bakasaru calmly, his figure leaning slightly on the wall behind him and tilting his head downwards slightly to speak to him. He may not seem immensily worried at the change of character of Goku...but that was Sanzo.

Goku had smelt Sanzo before he'd heard or seen him. The fake monk had an almost indisguisable scent that Goku coul pick out from anywhere, he'd spent far too much time with him to not be able to do so. After all, it had been seven years since they'd met. Since he'd been let free into the world.
Free. Goku had never truly knew what that word meant, he had never experienced true freedom. Yet it didn't bother him. The heretic child chose to be with Sanzo because he wanted to. He was loyal to the monk because he had been the one to save him. He was his mentor, his tutor and the closest thing to family the monkey could ever remember having.
The heavy chains in his hands slipped to the floor, filling the cave with echoes of the sharp sound. He finally raised his head, almost painfully slowly, to look at Sanzo who stood once again in the sunlight. As he had done so seven years beforehand. He had truly thought that Sanzo would leave him there, sat upon the floor, bound by chains. But he hadn't.. He'd helped. Surprising Goku in the process, "Your hair's the same colour as the sun," he said slowly, quietly. His voice echoed around the quiet cave, filling it with quiet whispers this time. Whispers that, although echoes, sounded as mournful as the boy sat upon the floor.
Suddenly, as if he'd just realised what he'd said he smiled brightly. That silly smile that always seemed to appear upon his lips when he didn't quite know what was going on. Though this time confusion didn't shine in his eyes. What made his golden eyes sparkle in an almost unnatural way at this moment were tears, tears that he wouldn't let fall in front of Sanzo. Not if he could help it anyway. "I'm fine," he assured Sanzo, "a little hungry, but i can eat later, right?" Eat later? That wasn't very Goku-ish, "just reminiscing is all. Thinking sucks, Sanzo. Remind me not to do it in future?" He was trying vainly to lighten the situation with a joke of some kind...

Sanzo watched Goku carefully and when the chains slipped from the bakasaru's fingers...the metallic echoes filled Sanzo's ears and bounced off all the crevices within this prison-like cave. Sanzo didn't react to the loud noise at all...nor did he say anything when Goku extremly slowly lifted up to his to look at Sanzo and said that his hair was the same colour as the sun. Those whispered words made Sanzo only shift his position ever so slightly, like he hadn't even moved, and maybe moved his head to look more towards Goku. Calmness radiating in those purple droopy eyes as Sanzo watched his 'pet' monkey act very docile and quiet...very unlike his bouncy, loud personality.
The cave made Sanzo think of when he first met Goku. The cave hadn't even changed much since the time he free'd the monkey. Still dirty, cold, isolated, chain-bearing and somewhere were you would just not want to spend for a solid 500 years. When he was sixteen...he didn't hang around here. He'd aswered Goku's call...the call that his master had warned to would eventually here and wouldn't be able to resist. And he couldn't. Sanzo had reached out to the earth child's hand and just like majic the chain fell freely off Goku and from then on he'd been at Sanzo's side. And Sanzo grew attached to him.
He blinked almost lazily and kept watching his bakasaru as a wide smile formed on his face. Bright and cheerful...usually the smile Sanzo came to know when Goku was confused...but as he looked into those golden eyes..confusion was adsent and instead a soft sorrow tinted them. "Eat later?" Sanzo mimicked Goku's words "..now you must be thinking hard..." he commented lightly as he brifly removed his gaze from Goku and around the walls of the cave, to the patchy light, to the chains...and finally back to Goku's eyes. "If i see that you look lost in thought i'll be sure to bring you back to your senses..." he said with almost a very small smile...was that maybe a hint of a small joke? ...you never know. He may however just be implying that he would just hit Goku with his fan if he went off in a daze...ah the stress-relief of it all.

Goku just blinked in return, not saying anything at first. The youth's mind was reeling with memories of his past, of the years he'd spent chained to the very spot he was sat in. The many times he'd tried vainly just to get at least one hand into the sunlight, just to feel it's warmth. The cave was sheltered to say the least, it saved him from freezing during the winters, even when snow covered the front of his personal prison. But it also meant that he slowly wilted away in the darkness, loosing what little memories he had and forgetting about the world outside...
Golden eyes finally lifted from the ground to the his Sanzo once again, still shining with unshed tears, "just... Don't hit me too hard," he said softly. It may have been annoying if he was grinning inanely like he usually did. But the mournful tone he spoke with made the situation seem a little more serious, "it hurts." When Gojyo hit him he took it in his stride, sure it hurt, but not as much as it did when the priest hit him. His emotions, as well as his body were harmed every time Sanzo hit him with that paper fan of his. Though everybody was unaware. Even the perceptive Hakkai.
"Hey, Sanzo?" He asked quietly, a needless way to get the fake monks attention. He knew he probably already had it. It was rare for Goku to ever be silent, even when he was sleeping, "can i ask you a question?" He wasn't sure exactly what he wanted to ask.. All he knew was that being back in this place brought back all of the confusion he'd felt when the golden haired boy had first come to him, answering a call Goku hadn't even known that he was sending out. A will of the Gods.. Gods in which Sanzo had no belief in.
The monkey's stomach gave another loud rumble and the only indication that Goku had heard it himself was the slight bowing of his head. After all, Sanzo had hit him with his fan for less than the rumbling of his stomach. Sometimes he expected to be hit even when the monk had no intentions on doing so. Though... Last time it had happened he'd ended up being, for lack of a better word, petted. Petted by the fake monk. Yea.. Even Hakkai had been shocked.

Sanzo's hint of a small smile disappeared as he watched Goku blink in reply. So silent...so un-Goku. It even made him worry inside...a worry he always felt everytime Goku did something stupid like run away. It didn't show on his face however...he kept his expression calm and content as he looked at Goku but his eyes once again difted off in different directions around the cave. However Goku's voice made his gaze once again draw itself to his bakasaru and Sanzo stared with a blank, droopy eyed expression.
'It hurts'...those words echoed in Sanzo's head and mind..and even if he didn't really want to hurt Goku...it was for his own good. If he told him off...well showed his relief by hitting Goku with his fan. Maybe he wouldn't go do something stupid he might regret. The fan hitting was a sign of relief. Even he had protected Goku once...a madman covered in talisman's was about to strike Goku through the belly with a long pike when he, Sanzo himself stood quickly infront of Goku and got himself stabbed. He wanted to protect the thing he had lost all those years ago.
Sanzo looked at Goku directly as he asked him if he could ask him a question...he replied simpily in a calm tone through his rogue voice "Yeah, but don't make it a stupid one.." he added to his 'yes'. Even in places like this...Sanzo still tried to be Sanzo-like. The loud grumble of Goku's stomach made him glance at the boy's seemingly mournful pose once again. He would let Goku eat when they were done talking.

Sanzo's face remained entirely emotionless the entire time that he sat there, which made the heretic child curious as to what his Master was thinking. Was the monk lost in memories of when they'd first met? Or was he thinking more of himself as he so usually seemed to do.. Goku wasn't too sure, and at that moment in time he wasn't sure he entirely cared either. He just wanted to know one thing;
"Why..." He paused, averting his gaze from the fake monk to the chains spilled in frotn of him, "Why did you bring me with you, Sanzo? I always thought you found me annoying.. And loud.." One of the first things Sanzo had said to Goku was 'stop calling me'. Stop being so noisy and irritating, just be quiet or he'd pop a bullet in him. Goku hadn't entirely understood what had been said, he'd never encountered a gun until he'd met the fake monk, so, predictably he just looked up at Sanzo with innocent golden eyes. By this time in his life he'd forgotton everything.. Or more like his memories had been sealed. Sealed by the Gods.
He blinked, tears threatening to spill at any moment. He didn't cry... Not in front of Sanzo. Not anymore. The priest only ever seemed to punish him if he ever saw him shed a tear. Either that or he just walked away, which shattered the Saru's heart everytime, "i want to know for sure.."

Sanzo looked at Goku with a calm expression and then turned his purple gaze away from him to look outside at the sunlight. Why did he keep him with him? That was a question he asked himself before he set out on this journey...when Goku had been eating the 'sacred peaches' at the temple and the monks questiones Sanzo's judge on companions. But the thing which made Sanzo even himself curious about was that he just couldn't leave Goku alone. He'd alwasy kept by Goku since he first met him and he would never leave him. It may have seem that from the start to where Sanzo had constantly threatened the Saru and punish him with his fan, that he didn't care for Goku at all. But the Bakasaru misunderstood...Sanzo worried for him...he worried everytime he ran off and so when Goku returned, he showed his relief by hitting Goku with his fan. Sanzo had made a vow all those years ago after his master had been murdered by Youkai. they had taken everything away from him that he cared for and after that moment, he realised just how small he was. So he vowed never to care for someone as much as he cared for his master as he just couldn't take it again. It had torn him apart and so never again has he had such a close friend. The problem was, he knew that he cared for Goku but couldn't show it just incase something did happen to the saru and once again Sanzo ended up losing something so precious to him. So he showed a more emotionless and grumpy side to the bakasaru. In that way...Goku didn't grow even more closer to him and Sanzo risking the life of someone he cared about.
Sanzo thought for a few moments, silence wrapping around the cave-prison as he kept silent before he finally turned his droopy-eyed gaze back to Goku. What would he tell him? That he cared for him secretly but couldn't really show it? That he thought goku was just good to have around even if he was annoying? That if Goku went off Sanzo would have this compelling urdge to seek him out? It was difficult as it was. "Because if you ran off you would start calling again and i really don't want to end up having a headache for the rest of my life..." Sanzo's reply came calmly as he looked in his droopy way at goku. He knew it wasn't what Goku would want to hear..but if he really told him it would ruin Sanzo's life. Everything from the past may happen yet again. He may lose a dear friend he had admitted to liking.
Sanzo watched Goku's watery eyes carefully, his head a little bowed as he stood in the cave now silent. His eyes sometimes difting to the chains and pathcy light but sometimes back to the sorrowful looking Goku. He couldn't win...and boy was that annoying. He didn't want Goku to cry..he didn't like watching him do so. So if he ever did, he hit him with his fan stressing his feelings of not wanting Goku to cry...or walked away. It may have hurt the Saru's feelings...but he just couldn't watch.

A small sniffle came from the side of the cave where Goku was sat. He'd lowered his head so that unruly hair fell forward to hide most of his face from view, covering it in the shadows which seemed to riddle the entire cave. Nobody could be sure as to whether or not the tears, that had been gathering in bright golden eyes, had fallen yet. He still sat with his knees out to the side, the soles of his feet pressed together to make a small area on the floor in between his legs where the chains lay abandoned. One hand still lay limply besides the chains, the other had been raised to his face, the palm rubbing against his cheek lightly as if he were trying to rid of something, perhaps those tears had fallen, or maybe he just had an itch.
"I don't do it purposely," he spoke eventually, finally raising his head. Golden eyes were still lowered to the floor though, he didn't want to look at Sanzo at that moment, he was content to drift away into a place where the sun didn't exist. Only for a few moments.. This place brought on more depressive feelings, made him wonder what it would have been like if Sanzo had just walked away and left him there in the cave, chained up and lonely. He became curious as to what his life would be like without the Sun.
To be truthful, he had been expecting that answer from Sanzo. As well as a scoff of some kind, he was pleasantly surprised when the latter hadn't come. Golden eyes finally lifted from the ground, settling themselves upon the golden haired monk with a steely determination that he hadn't held beforehand. The glistening tears had disappeared from his eyes, wet tracks trailing down his dirt smudged cheeks gave away exactly what he was doing whilst his head had been bowed. "If you found a way to shut me up for good.. A way to stop me calling to you, would you do it?" He asked calmly, almost challenging the monk with this question. In he first few weeks that he'd been with Sanzo, he'd been threatened time and time again with death. Sanzo had threatening to shoot him, kill him, and Goku truly thought he meant it. He'd even sigh heavily as if in stress and complain that the monkey was rechargeable so even if he did kill him, he wouldn't stay dead. It made Goku feel a little unwanted every time he thought back to it.
He just hoped he was strong enough now that he could be useful to Sanzo. So that he could help the group succeed in their quest.

Sanzo looked at the saru's face as he finally looked up at him. Sanzo had continued to look calmly at Goku even though his head was lowered, hearing the sniffiling that echoed lightly about the damp, dull cave and Sanzo once again as he looked at the sad saru, hearing a voice in his head...one that asked him to whether 'he could be his sun?" He had thought this before after Sanzo managed to release Goku form his beserking state after fighting with Kougaiji and Humoura (sp?). Could he be Goku's sun? Goku said that Sanzo's hair reminded him of the sun the first time Sanzo met him all the way in this very cave where no one would have thought exsisted. Althought Sanzo may have not thought it exsisted if he hadn't heard Goku calling out to him...if he hadn't heard him...would Goku have still been here to this very day alone?
Sanzo looked into Goku's slightly less watery golden eyes and saw that down Goku's dirty face lay a thin path on each cheek of tear stains. Goku asked him the question that Sanzo had one day expected him to ask. Whether is he found a way to stop Goku from calling him..would he go ahead and do it? This would mean death. The only way Sanzo would ever find piece was of the death of the saru. Goku had once asked Sanzo that if he ever went beserk what would he do? Sanzo had replied with that he would pull the trigger...repeating himself to make it a little clearer..maybe perhaps to himself. Like he secretly hoped that would never happen. But Goku had responded with a smile and a 'Thanks'. Truely the bond between monk and monkey was strong...in an invisible way that Sanzo never wanted to show of course. He let out a small, heavy sigh "Dammit even if i did you'd probably never stay quiet...you'd probably recharge and come back to haunt me..." Meaning...even if i killed you the earth would heal you and you would go back to normal. But maybe just a little grumpy at the fact that Sanzo shot him perhaps.
His purple eyes betrayed nothing to his strong hearted emotions. He stayed in a calm state and expression and leant his back a little more back onto the stone wall behind him, leaving only a smidgen of his figure left in the sunlight, whereas most of it was dulled by shadow. He raised a hand and ran fingers a little through his hair and then crossed his arms as he looked back to Goku as his eyes finished wondering around the chain's the saru still sat by. The chain's that bound him for 500 years...for a crime he couldn't remember.
He mentally sighed...situations like this really made Sanzo feel a little more quiet...Goku quiet was rare in itself and sometimes Sanzo offered to buy the saru a meat bun to perhaps cheer him up. But as they wern't near any village close, that wasn't really an option...and Goku hadn't comlained about being hungary in quite a while. He might as well enjoy the quiet while it lasted.

[[Ooh, harsh ^^ ]]
Goku's face was pleasantly blank as he stared at the golden haired monk. Even as Sanzo stared back at him he made no move, no muscle in his body moved, other than that of his heart which steadily beat in his chest. The silence of the cave had become so deep that he could hear every pulse of the tiny organ like a drum within his ears. Goku had seemingly come to understand the term 'deafeningly silent', a small phrase that he'd never quite worked out before, for how could silence deafen somebody? The clean trails down his cheeks, where the dirt had washed away beneath tears, were tingling upon his tanned skin. The cool air of the mountain cave seemed to take advantage of the liquid and seeped into his face. It was becoming increasingly hard not to wipe at his cheeks. If he did so though, Sanzo would know he had been crying and he didn't particularly want that.
Even though he knew that Sanzo probably already knew. The fake monk was really quite perceptive.
His lips curved into a small smile after Sanzo spoke, he knew that was the response he'd get from him. Sanzo was beginning to get predictable, which the Saru seemed to find the smallest bit amusing. Sanzo wouldn't be all too pleased if Goku told him that, he wouldn't be amused in the slightest. Goku had always wondered if he'd remember anything if he were to die and then recharge... Or if he would recharge at all actually. He seemed to be unaware of exactly what he could and couldn't do, in fact when he went 'beserk' he seemed completely unaware of the fact that even the powers of heaven couldn't stand against him. It was one of the things that Sanzo had never really taught him.. Maybe he thought it was better for Goku not to know.
"I probably would," he admitted finally, finally blinking those golden eyes of his. Sanzo seemed to have melted against the cave wall, being hidden by the shadows within the cave. Goku knew where all of the shadows within the cave were at every moment of the day. When one's stuck in the same place for years and years they begin to recognize and know things within that place better than they know the back of their own hands. Better even since Goku's hands were nearly always covered in dirt, "I don't mean to irritate you Sanzo," he added with a small smile. He pulled his knees closer to his chest, wrapping thin yet powerful arms around his legs to keep them in place, his chin placed upon his knees comfortably. He fell silent after that, looking as thoughtful as Goku ever really could do. At least now he didn't seem as upset as before, the saru could never be morbid for very long.
His stomach rumbled loudly, breaking the sudden silence of the cave. He laughed gleefully suddenly, "Sanzo, can we get some food? There's some left in jeep i think. Hey, Hakkai can cook!" He grinned, scrambling ungracefully to his feet. He was still shorter than the rest of them, but then he was only eighteen and still growing... Hopefully. "Please Sanzo!" He wanted out of the cave. The sooner the better in his eyes... He never wanted to see this place again... He always got that dreadful feeling that if Sanzo walked away from him at that moment and left him there, the chains on the floor would once again attach themselves to his ankles and wrists and he'd be stuck once again. The metal did seem to recognize him in some way... It's strange, but it was almost as if some kind of magic recognized him.

[[*grin*]]
Sanzo watched the saru smiled smally at him. Goku wasn't the one to cry openly freely infront of Sanzo if he could stop it. He had done it before...but he didn't really want to. Sanzo had only commented as to why the tears where there. Nothing remotely harsh...just a small comment. Like a friend would say maybe. If Sanzo would ever call his companions friends that is.
Sanzo made a little 'feh' noise when Goku said that he didn't mean to irritate him and would probably come back to haunt him. Then again...Sanzo would probably never forget that calling in his head. If the saru that called persistently out to him unitl he came and released him from his horrid prision in the mountains. Koumyu Sanzo, Sanzo's master had once told him that he called out to his master in the way Goku called to him. Obviously at the time Sanzo didn't know Goku but he wasn't confortable at the fact that he called out to someone...made him feel a little unsure about himself. Something he wouldn't have willingly done...even if his master did save his life from waters of the river. Sanzo watched as Goku moved position into a hugging one as he sat on the floor and he himself turned his gaze to look out at the scenery from the cave...at the landscape the saru had to endure for 500 years....you really could get bored of the same thing for that amount of time. Like being bored to death. Like Sanzo's previous life as Konzen, who was so bored to death he never took the time to admire anything in his life...unitl Goku came along that is and changed his life forever unitl his death.
The loud rumbiling of Goku's stomach seemed to lighten the air and make those purple drooping eyes shift back to the figure of the saru and watched as Goku laughed gleefully. Goku had gone back to his usual self in just a split second from a stomach rumble. If Sanzo was in a solem mood....he would have been like that for a very long time. Goku scrambled to his feet and as he questioned the monk, Sanzo uncrossed his arms and stood himself up, robes shifting down to hang around his feet lightly. He gave off a little 'hurh' as his mouth moved into a small side frown briefly, his eyes closing for a brief second and turned to walk out of the cave "Fine...but don't eat all of it...i'll kill you if you do." Sanzo uttered in his usual rogue tone as he started to step out of the dark and into the light, a light breeze catching his robes and strands of blonde. Rays of sun glinting golden of Sanzo's hair and dulling illuminating his fair skin as he started to make his way out of the cave and back towards where Hakkai and Gojyo were left...more to the bottom end of this mountain.
Goku really couldn't stay quiet for long...sure Sanzo may have liked the quiet..but could he really put up with a constant Goku as morbid as that? Probably not...Sanzo would probably be more grumpy and moody. Goku seemed to have the effect to somehow soften the monk up a little and vanish sudden cruelty from him. Something that may have helped get Sanzo through his life a little more lighter. Whether he thought this good or not however was another thing entirely.
